HISTORY![]() This team is Brantford's own and is steeped in tradition dating back to its beginnings in the Canadian Baseball League which was formed in 1911. An excerpt from the Brantford Expositor dated May 3, 1911 provides this history: "The schedule was drafted and adopted and Secretary Robinson was instructed to issue official copies to the press and the various clubs. The season will open on Wednesday, May 17, at Guelph, St. Thomas and Berlin, and on May 19, at London, Hamilton, and Brantford. The holidays were split up between the various clubs, with the season closing on September 16. One hundred and one games will be played, 55 in each town. The London Club announced that Jo-Jo Keenan had been signed as manager, with instructions to report in London to-day. Andy Kane, the Brantford manager, who attended the meeting, stated that he would have his team in the Telephone City this week, while the Guelph players were to report at Strathroy to-day, and Chaucer Elliott's squad was also expected to-day. St. Thomas and Guelph have exhibition games arranged for Friday and Saturday, while Knotty Lee's Hamilton team will likely play an exhibition game in Niagara Falls, N.Y., on Sunday." The Brantford Red Sox continued until 1915 when the war put an end to the league but the Red Sox continued in the Michigan-Ontario League from 1919 to 1922. In 1930 the Red Sox played in the short-lived Ontario League which collapsed with the onset of the Depression. However, they had a resurgence as an intermediate "A" team known as the Red Sox and became a power in the Intercounty League, winning both the League and the Ontario championships in 1931 and 1933. The Brantford Red Sox joined the ranks of the Intercounty Baseball League in 1934. Scanning the Intercounty archives, in the Pre-War years (1919 to 1941) it appears the Brantford Red Sox played in the league continuously from the 1934 season on and in 1936 the Red Sox team was the Runner-up. There were no winners available during the War years from 1942 to 1945. From 1946 to the present, the Brantford Red Sox were Intercounty Major Baseball League Pennant Winners 10 times - 1950, 1951, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1965, 1981, 2006 and 2010. Individual players garnered numerous titles as Inter-County Iron men including every category of batting, pitching, fielding and base-running. The Brantford Red Sox Baseball Club provides a place for talented players to further hone their skills and contribute to a sport they love to play and work hard to support. It is this Club's intention to continue to provide Brantford and area with a quality Intercounty Baseball Team working to entertain the fans and bring home the Championship. |
